Lettuce, kale, turnip greens and chard are great greens options. Watermelon, strawberries, and blueberries make healthy snacks for chickens when fed in moderation. A few flock favorites include: Vegetables: Lettuce, beets, broccoli, carrots, kale, swiss chard, squash, pumpkins and cucumbers.

And bored chickens can quickly become a real problem. Egg eating, feather pecking, aggression, even depression – standing still staring into space, for example – are all examples of what can happen if chickens can’t express natural behaviours( 1 , 2 ).

Just as dogs are devoted and loyal, chickens show their affection for example by following you around. They can even run to you when you call them or eat treats out of your hand. They may even sit on your hand or shoulder or become lap chickens.

Being very social creatures, hens tend to stay in groups even as they roam. Mostly hens love to forage. This means keeping moving, looking under trees for bugs and grubs. They do interrupt their search from time to time, taking time out to dustbathe or to get into the sandpits and have a bit of fun.

It is not recommended to leave your chickens alone for a week. Generally, it is recommended that you leave them for a maximum of four days at any one time. Getting a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member to take care of, or mind your flock regularly, can enable you to leave your birds for 7 days or more. Jul 25, 2020

It should be composted or aged prior to use. In addition, raw manure can contain pathogens that can harm people and animals. If composting is done properly, the process destroys disease-causing organisms, making chicken manure safe to use around plants, people and pets.
